who we are
marte is a platform of collaboration between professional figures specialized in visual arts, criticism and curatorship. marte is involved in the development of cultural projects, exhibitions and research projects that relate to mosaic aesthetics.
marte was founded in Ravenna in 2011, after a year of incubation in which the group’s development guidelines were defined. Since then, several initiatives have been realized, including contemporary art exhibitions, solo and group shows, and acoustic-visual performances documented through catalogs and video productions.
The aim of the association is to promote a critical reflection dedicated to those artistic practices that see mosaic as a point of reference, a starting point or a point of arrival.
the birth of marte
On April 15, 2011 in Ravenna, among the signatories of Memorandum of association are Daniele Torcellini (president), Luca Barberini, Arianna Gallo, Giuseppe Donnaiola, niko Ferreira Da Silva, Pavlos Mavromatidis and Takako Hirai.
In its first years of activity, marte stands out for the organization of exhibitions with an international scope, including the several editions of the group show O(Ax) = dO(Am) Impossible Equation and 80 mesh – The Shape of Sound, whose project is developed by Alessio Buttazzoni. The martian circuit widens and restricts.
In 2014, marte invites Invader, an internationally renowned French artist, to design and create a large mosaic outside the Planetarium building at Ravenna’s Public Gardens. This operation has great resonance in the city because in addition to the intervention agreed with marte, Invader gives rise to two independent invasions between 2014 and 2015, inhabiting the streets of the center with 40 works.
In 2015 marte presents two solo exhibitions testifying to new trends in contemporary mosaics. For the 4th edition of the Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic, marte curates Stories about Citizens Above Suspicion by Luca Barberini and Parametric Variations by the CaCO3 collective. In 2017, on the occasion of the 5th edition of the Contemporary Mosaic festival, the association develops its mosaic investigation by setting up four exhibitions by artists who make mosaic a unique and personal medium: Anonymous Representation by French artist Clément Mitéran; Transition by Polish artist Matylda Tracewska; The Vision of the Invisible by Argentine artist Sergio Policicchio; and Mon coeur mis à nu, et pas seulement by Italian artist Orodè Deoro.
